If you look after a relative, partner or friend who needs help because they are frail or have a disability you are a Carer. Many of us don’t realise that we can get help and support from outside agencies to help us deal with our caring roles.
Some things you may want to think about: • Do you get stressed and feel overwhelmed? • Do you get enough sleep? • Is your health affected in other ways? • Are you able to get out and about? • Do you get any time for yourself? • Are your other relationships affected? • Do you want information about benefits? • Are you worried you may have to give up work? • Are you interested in Training or Adult Education for yourself? • Is the person you care for getting enough help?
As a Carer you may neglect your own health and wellbeing because of your caring duties and responsibilities. However, these are very important; every year significant numbers of Carers are unable to continue to provide the level of care they may wish to because of illness or injury.
You can protect your health and increase your wellbeing with the right information and support. Many carers in the community are not getting the support that they need because they do not recognise themselves as Carers. Is this you?
Pennie Quaile-Pearce has recently been appointed as a Carer Recognition Worker for Guildford & Waverley; her role is to increase Carer recognition within surgeries and cross referral to Carer Support agencies so that there is an improvement to access to services. It is important that Carers now registered with their GP surgeries to signpost those in need to relevant help and support.
